A cloister for the contemplation of art.
An evocative landmark for the quiet, historic rural town, serving both the local community and drawing visitors from afar.
Common materiality and textures link all the buildings but the sizes, shape and form subtlety morph between each. The spiral nature of the buildings and horizontality of the site is emphasised by a continuous solid brick wall that weaves between all spaces linking them together. These walls are grounded by a continuous brick ground plane providing a terraced stepped base that defines congregation and circulation space outside each building. The gallery won’t be a singular moment but rather a rich variety of experiences. The spaces expanding and contracting as you move through them. The control of natural light is given a different form in each room, offering a variety of backdrops to the art.
